Do this:

1. Scroll: click and hold left mouse button on the white background, and drag the mouse leftwards, upwards, with the mouse button held down.

2. Scroll down to the Example Discussion below. Note how much text you don't need to read: pointless comments are collapsed — they don't waste your time.

3. Think about whether interesting comments are sorted to the upper left, and boring comments appear far away to the right. — The intention is that you find the most interesting comments first, when you start reading.
(Imagine the example discussion below, but moved to a "normal" forum: one single flat column, replies sorted by time — it would be unreadable. All you found wold be "Test", "Testing", "Test test" comments. But with Debiki, you quickly find what you're looking for.)

4. Test to leave a reply: click Reply.

5. Suggest an improvement. Click on this text (anywhere) and select Improve. Then you will be able to edit this text, and submit an improvement suggestion to the author of this page (that is, to me). You are using an old browser. If you had had a modern browser, you would have been able to click this text, edit it and submit your change as an improvement suggestion. Here you can download a newer browser. Internet Explorer version 9 and above works.

6. Have a look at other demo pages:

7. Download and install Debiki on your own server. It's open source.

Dolphins.

They have no arms and can do no evil. And they are intelligent, and always smile :-)

Well, that wasn't entirely true. — They are bullying each other sometimes. And although they many times have saved humans from drowning, or from sharks, they have also actually killed humans — some poor fellow that surprised them by jumping from the boat down in the middle of them.

Grizzly bears and polar bears are not particularily kind, actually. As far as I've seen on TV, male bears kill (and eat?) their own children, if they happen to find them.

Are you sure it's also the kindest? Most of the time we're being kind is when we're trying to fix our own or somebody else's cruelty.

Like helping the homeless is kind. But the reason they're homeless is most likely due to other people's cruelty.

You're drag-scrolling with the mouse? (I.e. clicking and dragging on the white background)

You would have had to scroll an even longer distance, downwards, had everything been placed in a single 1D column. (Isn't that worse? I think)

It's a problem, however, I agree — and now I'm thinking about [replies-to-the-OP that don't get any replies themselves]. They make the page very very wide, leaving it mostly blank.

Illustration: (the two rightmost replies are problematic because they make the page too wide. I wonder how that can be fixed?? Placing them on top of each other somehow?)

You could tab the comments, eg with twitter bootstrap tabs,

left tab - most interesting (or newest/oldest) center tab - less interesting right tab - least interesting

Would also solve the problem of having to scroll right, especially on smaller screens.

1. By Anonymous??, 2013-07-07 01:52:12Z#118

Also, the arrows make little sense with the comments already nested. The arrow distract from the content. Most people should be familiar with nested comments anyway.

1. By KajMagnus, 2013-07-11 08:40:50Z#120, improved , 2013-07-11 08:42:20Z

That is true. I think the arrows are really only helpful when the replies "branch out", I mean, when there are >= 2 replies to a comment.

(Someone else has also suggested that.)

2. By KajMagnus, 2013-10-13 01:46:42Z#133

I've removed most arrows now, and only kept arrows that are actually needed (which they are if there are many replies to a reply, since the layout isn't the standard nested comment layout: the last reply isn't indented).

2. By KajMagnus, 2013-07-11 08:39:51Z#119

That cold work unless there are too many replies to the root post. For example, on this page, there are 36 direct root post replies — then there would be 36 tabs?

Perhaps it's possible to make it work anyway, by showing only the next 3 tabs or something like that.

I'm afraid some people wouldn't realize that they were supposed to click on the tabs to find more comments.

well there isnt much you can do about it ... and in real life such nesting is not useful... in fact, have you considered not nesting at all --> one column is one "initial comment plus all replies"?

1. By KajMagnus, 2013-03-28 10:43:13Z#17, improved , 2013-06-11 07:56:09Z

Hmm, not much. I've thought about not increasing the indentation level, if there's only one reply, however.

I think one could restrict nesting depending on how wide the column is. I don't know if you've noticed that you can resize the column — if you hover this column with the mouse, a "resizable vertical line handle" appears.

Ooops this one is definitively too deeply nested :-(

Edit: Now I've mitigated the problem with too deep indentation :-) /Edit (June 2013)

Everything is wonderful. But! You do not have instructions on how to connect it. This is not correct.

Thanks. V.

I mean your script cursor control. No lessons or instructions. Thanks. V.

(Sorry for the very late reply)

Oh you mean Utterscroll, the dragscroll script? Please find instructions here: https://github.com/debiki/utterscroll

I tried the Script, but i'm getting an error

TypeError: $viewportGhost.offset(...) is null

using - jQuery 1.7.2 - modernizr - jquery scrollable - utterscroll

can u help plz?

[Edit] Old somewhat incorrect comment, please see my more recent comment instead, with a link to an example HTML file. [/Edit]

Hi Fedol,

Do you wait with running Utterscroll until the document has been loaded? Otherwise document.body might be null I think, which would result in the error you're seeing.

I created a JsFiddle here: (but it doesn't work as I would have expected)

http://jsfiddle.net/nZa2K/

and document.body is null, therefore $viewportGhost.offset() becomes null. I wonder why document.body is null, because JSFiddle does wait with running the Javascript code until the document has been loaded:

//
$(window).load(function(){
debiki.Utterscroll.enable();
});//

Right now I'm thinking that the problem is somehow related to the script being run in an inside e.g. JsFiddle, and/or that you should wait with calling Utterscroll until after the document has been loaded. (If that's the problem, I should document it.)

Hi again, here is a small example HTML file that shows how you can use Utterscroll. I wasn't aware about this, but currently one needs to load Utterscroll at the bottom of the HTML page (or load it lazily on the page load event).

The example is linked from https://github.com/debiki/utterscroll too.

Super interesting work. My only note relates to a widescreen monitor—I tend to read the inner-most (2) columns versus the outer-most-left column (after scrolling a bit). Either way, great explorations and documentation.

For old people: Yes I suppose it might become too complex.

For today's children that grow up with computers: Perhaps almost "no"?

nested reply?

1. By Anonymous??, 2014-01-17 03:16:07Z#144

not interesting. reply can only nest for 3 levels.

1. By KajMagnus, 2014-01-18 01:33:55Z#145

Replies can nest to any level. However if there's only 1 reply, then there's really no need to increase indentation — instead I'm simply placing the new reply directly below the old one.

However, if there're 2 replies, then I show arrows and indent, since if they were placed directly below with no arrows, it wouldn't be clear which one replied to which.

2. By KajMagnus, 2014-01-18 01:34:08Z#146

Example of nested reply with arrows.

This page is a forum topic, and the comment section is intended as the main contents of the page.
